Special diet cakes
After getting a request for a birthday cake made with more healthful ingredients, I've been really looking into recipes using alternative flours, sweeteners, etc. To my surprise, there are an awful lot out there! As much as I appreciate products made with whole wheat flour, I wasn't sure if a cake made with it would be coarse or dense--and then I discovered the existence of whole wheat pastry flour, which is finer and should result in a lighter texture. And there are endless ways to sweeten foods without resorting to good ol' refined white sugar--molasses, honey, fruit, you name it. I am really excited to try out some of the new recipes and products I've come across. Special diets is a subject dear to me, as my daughter has a severe peanut allergy. I've grown very accustomed to thoroughly reading food labels because for her, and for many other people, it really is a matter of life and death. So whether you need a cake free of very specific ingredients or you would just like one that you can feel good about eating, I'm sure there are options and I'd be happy to explore them with you!

Long time, no write

Hmmm, it's been awhile. I am blaming my absence on the general chaos that has become our way of life--unexpectedly long travels, sick kids, and...a cake! Here is my latest creation, a two-tier birthday cake. The birthday brother and sister are almost exactly two years apart and had a joint party, so the cake had a removable top tier so that they each could blow out candles on their own cake. The top tier is white cake, the bottom Devil's Food, and I modeled the fondant bugs after the party invitation and a certain very hungry caterpillar. It was strangely therapeutic, taking me back to my Play-Doh days...
